Over $18,000 Raised in Deep Freeze Dunk For Rankit School

On Saturday, January 21, a typical cold winter day in Minnesota, 62 very brave people jumped into the frigid water of Fish Lake of Maple Grove as a “reward” for raising money from their friends and family to build the Rankit public secondary school in 2012! A record amount was raised for this third year of the Deep Freeze Dunk – over $18,000!!

Congratulations to Abby Harrison for raising the greatest amount as an individual – over $2100! Her prize was a new winter jacket. Runners up were Jamie Sledd and Danny Sussman. Congratulations also to Abby’s team “AwesomeSauce” which won the prize for the most money raised by a team – over $4200! Her team members included Nicole Harrison, Danny Sussman and Tiffany Li, and they will be recognized with a plaque. Congratulations also to Andrew Brown, who received the prize of a soft shell jacket, for winning best costume: wearing a speedo, a hand-made holiday-type vest, neon sunglasses, and a headband that spiked up his hair (check out the Flickr photos).
It was a fun, festive time for these hardy souls and their on-shore admirers. We are so grateful for their dedication, enthusiasm, and generosity of spirit to endure the cold water for the children of Haiti.
We thank Tony Kieffer and his Maple Grove Rotary Club for their sponsorship of the event, as well as the Rotary Partnership for Haiti and City of Lakes Rotary Club. We thank COL Rotary member Olaf Minge who, along with Tony and Haiti Outreach Development Director Dale Snyder, did most of the planning and organizing for the Dunk. Thank you also to our volunteers who helped that day, the Fire Department and EMT’s, and our corporate sponsors, including First Class Mortgage of Maple Grove, Arbor Lakes Dental, Schmitt Music, and CCG Creative. Finally, we thank all of the donors who supported the dunkers with their generous gifts.

Water.org Co-Founders Join Haiti Outreach in Haiti

On January 4-6, one week before the second anniversary of the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Water.org co-founders Matt Damon and Gary White joined Haiti Outreach’s President Jeffrey Brown to attend a well inauguration to see first-hand the impact of community engagement in creating water solutions in Haiti.
Damon, White and Brown also participated in discussions with other non-profit organizations, governmental departments, and companies that are committed to working together to find creative, new ways to tackle water, sanitation and hygiene issues in Haiti.
The inaugurated well built under the guidance of Haiti Outreach will bring fresh, safe water to 300 people – people who previously had to walk to rivers to collect dirty water for their daily use. The community’s celebration consisted of an opening prayer, stories about how the well came to be built, a public review of the community’s rules and regulations governing the well, as well as skits, music and dancing.
In 2010, Haiti Outreach and Water.org entered into an agreement to bring clean water to 18,000 people in the neighboring towns of Pignon and San Raphael by rehabilitating broken wells and drilling new ones.
“With their unique experience in community-managed water systems, Haiti Outreach is a very important partner for Water.org”, stated Gary White, CEO and co-founder of Water.org. “We look forward to a long and fruitful working relationship to bring safe water and adequate sanitation to the people of Haiti.”

Following the 2010 earthquake, Haiti Outreach marshaled their water-related resources to conduct humanitarian aid in the capital of Port-au-Prince and other damaged areas. They furnished clean water to thousands of homeless and tent city people for months, repaired the broken water and electrical systems of the General Hospital, created a water system for a Doctors Without Borders clinic, and located and repaired damaged wells in the rural earthquake areas.

3rd Annual Deep Freeze Dunk – January 21st

Middle School Brothers Run For Haiti

Cole and Will Lalonde are 7th and 6th graders, respectively, who love to run and are part of the cross country team of Minnetonka Middle School East. Cole was in the 6th grade last year and participated in the Haiti Walk for Water in May (see other story about their great event). He raised around $100 just himself as his parents agreed to pay him $2 for every mile he ran. He also got pledges from other people, and his father works for Microsoft which matched 25% of the funds he raised that day.
This fall, their parents decided to encourage them to run more by agreeing to pay $1 to each boy for every mile they ran while participating on their team. The boys said they wanted to donate the money to Haiti Outreach for more wells. So recently, the Lalonde family presented us with a check for $250 for clean water wells in Haiti, because Cole and Will ran over 200 miles this fall!
Why would they do this? Cole said “The Haiti Water Walk in May was really fun.
We are fortunate to have food and clean water in abundance here, but the people in Haiti do not, so we wanted to help.” We are so grateful to the Lalondes, not only for the donation that they gave, but to see how Cole and Will and other students at MME learned how difficult life can be in Haiti, took it to heart, and wanted to help and make a difference. And they really did! Thank you so very much. We are very proud of you!

Statistics Show Effectiveness of Haiti Outreach Model

Dionissi Aliprantis (PhD, University of Pennsylvania) is an economist who has traveled to Haiti several times since his first trip in 2000. He became acquainted with Haiti Outreach in 2009 and decided to do a statistical study to compare the Haiti Outreach model of community development, where community members are trained and responsible for their well’s upkeep and repair, to what is done in most cases, where an outside group is responsible for the well’s maintenance.
The results of the study have now been published as a working paper of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) based in Washington, DC. You can download and read a summary of the report by clicking HERE. The IADB has made the full study available on its web site, and you can also download it and read it by clicking HERE. The study finds that indeed the Haiti Outreach community-based model produced superior results, providing clean water to more people for a longer period of time and at a lower long-term cost. We are very pleased that an outside evaluation has demonstrated the effectiveness of our community development model, and we intend to use the report as evidence that our work makes a difference as we seek additional funding. We are very grateful to Dionissi for all his efforts, and to our project engineer Sarah Ocwieja and Director of New Projects Neil Van Dine who contributed to Dionissi’s report.

What an amazing, awe-inspiring day we had on November 16! We truly hope that you had as much fun as we did on Give to the Max Day!
With 77 friends jumping to our cause, we raised $10,395. Not to mention, we more than tripled our gifts- last year 33 friends helped us raise $3,550. Awesome! And it’s just our second year!
In the span of ONE day, we made enough money to build another well in Haiti- helping give access to clean water for nearly 500 people! This could even help to eradicate the cholera epidemic which has spread through Haiti and brought such sad devastation to its people.
But our work doesn’t end there- there’s still so much to do! It is our goal to make Give to the Max Day, Give to the Max Year! If we can achieve an entire new well in a single day, imagine what we can do in a year!
