Haiti Outreach is a thought leader in Sustainable Clean Water Development in Haiti. Sustainability is our mantra and permeates every level of our operation. Sustainability extends far beyond building a Water Well in Haiti that lasts. It requires utilizing local resources, local water well management, long-term success rates, and local infrastructure talent with the specialized knowledge to build and maintain their own water systems. In short, true sustainability is about Haitian talent solving Haitian problems.
Haiti Outreach – Sustainable Clean Water Wells – Haitian Talent
Haiti Outreach has installed about 1,200 wells providing Clean Water Access to 100,000 Haitians over the past 20 years. Our 43 person staff is based in Pignon, Haiti with a staff of three in the United States. All but two of our Pignon staff are Haitians, and all live and work in the communities they serve.
Haiti Community Initiated Water Well Management
Haiti Outreach builds wells that have been requested by the local community. We also require a community based well management system (with at least 50% woman members) to operate, collect fees, be responsible for and administer the operation of their own community well. Haiti Outreach has a spectacular success rate with over 90% of wells still functioning after 10 years. Unmanaged water wells, in contrast, typically break down after only a few years, waiting for another NGO to hopefully come in and take responsibility for their problems. Our community managed well program has been so successful that many other NGO’s such as World Vision, Generosity.org, Rotary International and the Red Cross routinely contract with us to train communities and build community wells to insure sustainability.
